Squeeze Me

I used to listen to Squeeze when I was young because they represented new and exciting sounds and ideas coming out of London. Never in a million years would I have imagined being able to meet them. Fast Forward the tape….there was the co-founder sitting in my chair telling me, “I trust everything you do.” Why, you ask? Last year when I was on tour with Steve Poltz and Glenn Tillbrook (co-founder of Squeeze), I cut Glenn’s hair in an English pub built in the 1200’s. He explained during a consultation that he loved both the shape of the cut I had done as well as the grow out period, and this is why he made time during his American tour to book an appointment. I couldn’t be more honored to share my talents with someone that has had such a strong impact on the culture that I grew up in.

I spent a month in London in 1985. Within the first few days of landing, I visited a salon I heard about in a music documentary and had my roots lightened and colored bright red. I was excited to see and learn about a foreign subculture, and having the right hair was part of the experience. When Erin Anderson, co-founder of Woodley and Bunney, asked me to be part of a photo contest that involved creating a look that depicted a period and genre in London, my left eyebrow raised. I became obsessed. I pulled out all of my old photos- I googled images for hours. The intensity was furthered by the photographer: HERNY DILTZ! It has been fun reconnecting with my past. I will be spilling out more details in upcoming posts. I shot this image on my iphone.

Kelly Osborne: my new hero. This amazes me. I know hair can have an impact on your overall look, but this is such a strong example it has me grinning from ear to ear. I kept hearing about how great her hair looked from random sources and I just had to see for myself. I have to thank Tara from yoga class today for giving me the heads up about how stunning this most recent shade of lavender looks. It is not for everyone, but it sure is fun to look at!

Who’s Erin?

There are few people in the world that have a vast impact on my life. Erin Anderson is one. Her hands created the floating tresses in the image above.

She is relentless in her quest for finding the best tools for high fashion. In her tool box: Her own salon and apothecary (WOODLEY & BUNNEY), and her editorial styling career that has graced the cover of well respected indie magazines such as Nylon and Paper. While on shoot in Stockholm, she wandered into a pharmacy in search of the next great product and…there it was: Sachajuan. The world needed this product and she decided to distribute it. Thank you, Erin.

Erin will be visiting me on Wednesday to brainstorm on ways to make the world a more beautiful place. I will pass it on.

Salon Tonic Attends an Oribe “Atelier”

Salon Tonic was honored to be invited to and attend a hands on workshop in San Fransisco on September 27th with the master himself: Oribe. His appearances are becoming rare as his product line swells with success. He is an amazing man with a vast amount of inspiring energy. We love Oribe almost as much as his products.

We LOVE education. I decided to nickname the salon UST. University of Salon Tonic. Oribe Editorial Stylist Ronnie Stam taught an amazing and inspiring class last Wednesday evening to the entire salon TONIC staff. Having toured with the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, coiffed numerous supermodels and celebrities, and previously owned a salon in Amsterdam, he was brimming with experience and knowledge that we all soaked up. You can view the photos from the evening here. My most memorable moment was when he said, “The salon should be a training center to educate everyone- including clients- on how to do better hair.” I couldn’t agree more. Salon TONIC and Oribe are partners in making the world a more beautiful place, one head of hair at a time. Let us make you more beautiful.

Salon Tonic is honored to be hosting a demonstration by the one and only Oribe. We’re so excited we can hardly sleep! It’s like Christmas Eve or The night before a new Coen Brothers movie premiere. Only better! We love Oribe and are anxiously awaiting his arrival to our humble little hair salon. By the time he’s done with his demonstrations our noggins will be full of brand new hairy ideas. He’s got duffel bags full of hair pieces that he’s going to turn into art on live models. A blonde, a brunette and a redhead will be transformed into living art. Read what others are saying.

Elan Sassoon

When I was a young girl, the thought of being part of the world that Vidal Sassoon created seemed magical. The man himself was, to me, an untouchable icon. Immortal. Larger than life. So… you can imagine my shock and awe when last week his son, Elan Sassoon walked in the front door of salon Tonic. Wow. He was gracious, humble, and genuinely interested in knowing about the culture I created. As we sat on the lobby sofa, I couldn’t help but feel as though I was looking into the face of his father. Can you see the resemblance in the photos? Sometimes life can hand you gifts when you least expect it. Meeting Elan Sassoon was magical.
